These are my close buddies who taught me about savoring the world.

The furred four legged was a dedicated foraging pal the time this photo was taken, circa 2008. She was a gourmand, living a grand life of adventure, full of intriguing flavors.  In her salad days, we’d run to the river, she’d inspect the shoreline and nibble grass while I harvested nettles. I’d hunt for novel plant friends, my new Peterson’s Field Guide for Medicinal Plants and Herbs in hand, pausing and flipping and making notes, while she’d chase scent trails up and down the wooded beech hills.

One of the most unforgettable foraging experiences was with these two, Felix and Lectron, at the tail of an eight hour romp along the Brandywine river. Exhaustedly making our way back home, we happened upon an enormous cherry tree with freshly fallen fruit scattered and splattered densely about. Each of us, Lectron included, sank our faces to the ground, devouring the sweetest, ripest, most gracious cherries I’ve ever had.

This autumn it was Lectron’s moment to return back into the fold of mystery, the place where the cherry pits somehow, encased in scat become life again, where all things meld, transform, and become anew. We are still grieving her absence and feel ever grateful for her free spirit companionship over the years.
